Mute, quiet witnesses, hollowed out by the steady trickle of time. Erratic boulders (or maybe: foundlings) carried from another age, deprived of their kinetic energy and frozen in time. A centered artifact, like a visitor from a distant universe that’s (or maybe: who’s) just stumbled across your doorsill.

INDICES doesn’t give out any answers. Out there, there is no progress, no intentions, no love, no hate. There’s neither a beginning nor an end to be found – nothing humane. Those objects themselves don’t ask questions, they don’t talk. Much like in an unfinished documentation, its parts hold only emptiness; no language has been found yet. And now, no matter where we stand or what it is we confront, “evidence of relevance” may only be secured by indulging ourselves in their neutrality.

Nevertheless the world bewitches us, still trapping us with that strange kind of magic diffusing a long forborne calmness. And those seeds fall on fertile soil.

Threre are about 7 street photographers in the Plaza Alonso de Mendoza of La Paz. Most of their trade consists of ID portraiture with Polaroid cameras. Casual 35mm full body portraits against the different features of the park are quite popular among their regular customers. I took a picture of every photographer and the photographer took a picture of me, so I created photographic relation between my picture and the photorapher.

Brother Antonio is a 75 year old Franciscan brother. I photographed an filmed him during a year. Everyday he is visiting old and sick people,who are alone or is giving students private lessons. Earlier he was a biology teacher.In his sparetime is writing funny stories about his mouse in the kitchen. I was intersted in the daily life of a not ordinary way of life.

100% Happy avoids a purely documentary approach by inserting slogans borrowed from advertising and common expressions in everyday speech. The accumulation and the ambiguity of these expressions, which are as important as the straight-forward pictures they are part of, strike us by their punchy immediacy.

Presented in book form, this manifesto denounces the social, economic and ecological contrasts caused by our consumer society. In a playful, ironical and impertinent way, the dialectical tension between what is familiar and what is inaccessible dominates. The artist invites the spectator to question the stakes of current global politics as well as the echoes of this reality in private and universal perception (especially the alter ego and the status of the image itself).
